Over 600 households have been affected by flooding in the Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The Chairman of the area, Sirajo Shehu MaiBala, disclosed this while briefing Governor Ahmed Aliyu during his visit to the flooded areas and displaced communities.
According to him, the devastating floods occurred on August 3, affecting more than 600 households in the region. He added that the displaced individuals are currently taking refuge in schools and filling stations within the area.
MaiBala expressed his gratitude to the Governor for the visit, noting that it has rekindled hope among the displaced persons for receiving support from the state government.
In his remarks, Governor Ahmed Aliyu sympathized with the displaced families and the entire Illela community over the disaster.
“What I have seen in Illela is unbelievable—the floodwaters are overwhelming,” the Governor said. “I assure you that the state government will come to the aid of the affected families to help restore their livelihoods.”
The Governor, who visited a camp at Illela Secondary School, also directed the immediate repair of the school, which is currently in a state of disrepair. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to making educational institutions conducive to teaching and learning.
The Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, announced a donation of N20 million from the state government, in addition to N10 million from Senator Aliyu Wamakko.
The state government also donated 1,000 mats and blankets, along with a truckload of rice to the flood victims.
A key highlight of the visit was the flagging off of the distribution of relief materials to the affected communities.
