The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, Agnes Sessie, has pledged to intensify efforts toward securing the implementation of pension increases for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in the state.

Sessie made the commitment on Friday while addressing pensioners during the Open Congress Day celebration held in Oshodi, Lagos.

She stated that CPS pensioners in Lagos deserve to benefit from pension increments in the same manner as their counterparts at the federal level, noting that the labour movement would explore both engagement and political avenues to achieve the objective.

According to her, the election year presents an opportunity for organised labour to renegotiate a new minimum wage for Lagos State workers and press for the implementation of pension increases for CPS retirees.

While reiterating labour’s demands, Sessie commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his stewardship of the state’s affairs.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council, Comrade Michael Omisande, called on the Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Babalola Obilana, to act decisively on the issue of pension increases for CPS retirees.

Omisande disclosed that it had been over two months since a template for pension adjustments was submitted, warning of a possible protest by retirees if LASPEC continues to delay implementation.

He further noted that both the governor and the LASPEC Director-General had, at different fora, assured stakeholders that Lagos State would adopt the Federal Government’s template for pension increases. He added that federal retirees have been benefiting from the adjustments since November 2025.

The Open Congress Day is held annually to commemorate the establishment of the NUPCPS in Nigeria on February 27, 2017. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Freedom of Association, a Fundamental Human Right in Nigeria.”
