On a bright afternoon, the academic community gathered to celebrate an extraordinary milestone — the launch of Learning and Cognition in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Age, a festschrift honoring Professor Musa Balarabe. More than a collection of essays, the book is a heartfelt tribute to a distinguished scholar whose lifelong dedication has profoundly shaped the fields of learning and cognition.

Professor Balarabe’s enduring commitment to education is reflected in the diverse themes explored within the volume. The contributors — a blend of experts, educators, and students from Nigeria and beyond — examine the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and education, offering insights into how technology is redefining how we teach and learn. Collectively, their works pay homage to an educator whose influence continues to inspire intellectual growth and innovation.

The opening section of the book celebrates Professor Balarabe’s achievements and transformative vision. His advocacy for inclusive education and the adoption of innovative teaching tools has revolutionized classrooms, ensuring that learning remains accessible to all. In Nigeria’s educational landscape, few figures stand as tall as Professor Musa Balarabe. His remarkable journey — marked by academic excellence, integrity, and service — has not only brought pride to the Tukur-Tukur community but has also left an enduring imprint on education across Nigeria and beyond.

Professor Balarabe began his academic journey at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education (Second Class Upper) in 1979. He followed this with a Master’s in Educational Psychology in 1981 and later obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1989 under a Commonwealth Scholarship. This distinguished academic progression reflects his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and his deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education.

As the founding Head of the Department of Educational Psychology and Counselling at ABU, Professor Balarabe laid the foundation for one of Nigeria’s most dynamic educational psychology programs. His visionary leadership transformed the department into a hub of innovation and research, inspiring generations of scholars and educators.

Beyond the walls of academia, his influence has been far-reaching. From 2001 to 2012, he served with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), where his expertise shaped policies and programs that strengthened the nation’s educational foundation. His collaborations with institutions such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), the World Bank, UNICEF, and UNESCO further underscore his contributions to global educational development.

A prolific researcher and author, Professor Balarabe has published extensively on the psychology of learning and educational development. His works bridge theory and practice, providing educators with actionable insights to enhance teaching outcomes and learner engagement. His scholarly influence continues to enrich classrooms, research circles, and policy discussions across the continent.

His numerous accolades — including the Tafawa Balewa Memorial Fund Award for Scholarship (1981) — affirm his excellence, but his true legacy lies in the generations of students and mentees he has inspired. Known for his empathy and mentorship, he embodies the ideal of an educator as both a guide and a lifelong learner.

Professor Musa Balarabe’s contributions to educational psychology and national development remain profound and far-reaching. His life’s work reflects a deep faith in the human mind’s potential and in education as the most powerful tool for societal progress. As we celebrate him, we are reminded of the values he represents — curiosity, compassion, and commitment to lifelong learning — values that continue to illuminate the path for educators in the age of artificial intelligence.
